Heritage, Hospitality and the Future

22 January 2024

Nick de Klerk spoke to Sleeper Magazine recently about the opportunities of adapting heritage buildings for luxury hotels

"Through use and adaption, buildings develop a unique character that reflects the time and place in which they exist"

— Nick de Klerk, Purcell's Head of Hospitality

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and Ballyfin Hotel, Ireland

Buildings, despite assumptions to the contrary, are not static, says Nick de Klerk, Head of Hospitality at Purcell, which through decades of work on heritage sites across the UK, has developed a craft and knowledge-based design approach that can be sensitive or radical, depending on the project demands.

Having joined Purcell in 2023, bringing over 20 years of experience in hospitality, retail, residential and workplace design, de Klerk is continuing to drive home the firm's heritage philosophy thanks to his own interest in historic structures. The architect believes improving their performance and efficiency, as well as carefully modernising them through refurbishment and adaptive reuse, is important work in the context of both conserving built heritage and addressing the climate crisis.
