The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London

The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London, Ballyfin Demesne in Ireland, and Coworth Park near Ascot are amongst the first to be given the MICHELIN Guide’s new distinction for hotels, the MICHELIN Key.

As the MICHELIN Star recognises the world’s best restaurants, the Key seeks to highlight outstanding hospitality and hotel stays, judged on architectural excellence and interior design amongst other criteria.

The first One, Two, and Three Key hotels have now been announced, and we are proud to share that three Purcell hotel projects have made the initial list, including two out of a total 14 Three Key hotels – the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park and Ballyfin Demense.

As architects and lead design consultants for the renovation and refurbishment of the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, we were thrilled to hear judges call it ‘astonishingly luxurious’ and praise the ‘elegant and traditional’ rooms combined with modern infrastructure and ‘huge, luxurious bathrooms’.

A world apart from the Mandarin Oriental is Ireland’s Ballyfin Demense, a Regency country house set in 614 acres of parkland and woodland, restored and transformed by Purcell into a luxury hotel. The MICHELIN Key selection team commended the restoration, commenting ‘And if the exterior is a pitch-perfect restoration, worthy of a 19th-century period film, the interiors are a contemporary-classic evolution of the house’s original style, an opulent fantasy to rival any country-house hotel you could name’.

Part of the esteemed Dorchester Collection, Coworth Park in Berkshire has been awarded two MICHELIN Keys. Purcell was commissioned to design the eco-luxury spa, discreetly woven into the hotel’s grounds – we were therefore especially pleased to hear it described as ‘the most stylish space of all’ and ‘a modern glass-fronted architectural marvel’.

The recognition achieved by hotel projects in the Purcell portfolio is testament to the important role that our outstanding built heritage continues to play in providing both the infrastructure and the setting for leading hotel operators to create unique and memorable hospitality experiences in 2024.
