Newcastle Cathedral picks up RIBA North East Award
The ambitious Sacred Space in Common Ground project at Newcastle Cathedral has received a RIBA North East Award.
The project, which became one of the first Grade I-listed cathedrals to install air source heat pumps upon the project's completion, was praised by judges for its sensitive interventions of modern technology within the historic fabric.
Judges also noted 'how the space has improved the cathedral’s flexibility and dramatically increased visitor numbers, bringing demonstrable social value in the range of events, opportunities and support that the project has enabled'.
I'm thrilled that Newcastle Cathedral has won a RIBA North East Regional Award; I’m especially humbled to hear that the judges recognised the new works as being “handled elegantly with care and craft” and with “an exceptional level of attention to detail".
